About the spread
After a breakup the question “will they come back?” can occupy every thought. This spread does not only look for a yes or a no: it starts with the reason the relationship ended, because that reason usually decides what happens next. A couple that broke up over a misunderstanding has different chances from one that broke up over a deep difference in what they want from life.
The top row is the past and the present: why it ended, what your ex feels now and what you feel now. The bottom row shows what stands between you and the chance of a return. The last card speaks honestly — sometimes the most useful thing it can show is that your energy is better spent on moving on.
How to do the reading
- Think of your ex and of the moment the relationship ended. Ask about one person per reading.
- Type your question into the box above the deck if you like, for example “Will Sam and I get back together?”. It never leaves this page.
- Press “Shuffle and deal”: three cards land in the top row and two in the bottom row.
- Turn over the first card first: the reason the relationship ended is the key to the rest of the reading.
- Then turn over the others and read each position below. A card’s page tells you more about it in love.
What each position means
1 Why it ended
The real reason the relationship ended — not always the one that was said out loud. Swords often point to words, arguments and decisions of the mind; Cups to hurt feelings or feelings that faded; Pentacles to everyday life, money or distance; Wands to burnout, jealousy or different paces of life.
2 Their feelings now
What your ex feels now, about you and about the breakup. Look for regret, relief, longing or indifference. A reversed card often means mixed feelings the person has not sorted out yet. Remember that the card shows their energy, not a promise of a call.
3 Your feelings now
What you feel now. It is worth being honest here: do you miss this person, the relationship, or simply not being alone? Sometimes this card shows that you are the one who has already started to move on.
4 What stands between you
What stands between you today: the old problem, pride, a new partner, distance, the people around you or a fear of repeating the same pain. If this obstacle is the same as the reason in the first card, it has not been resolved yet.
5 The chance of a return
The chance of a return and what it would look like. A favourable card means the door is not closed, but it rarely means “just wait”: something has to change first. A difficult card is not a punishment — it is advice to put your feelings into your own future.
How to read the spread as a whole
Compare the first and fourth cards. If the reason for the breakup and the present obstacle are the same, a return would bring back the same problem unless one of you changes. If they are different, the original conflict may already have lost its force.
Judgement, the Six of Cups, the Star and the Wheel of Fortune are traditionally read as signs of a reunion; the Three of Swords, Death and the Eight of Cups as signs of an ending that is meant to stay. Whatever the cards say, a reading should help you take care of yourself, not keep you waiting.
Questions about the spread
Can tarot tell me exactly when my ex will come back?
No spread can name a date reliably. This one shows whether the conditions for a return exist and what would have to change. As for timing, the last card can only hint at fast (Wands) or slow (Pentacles) development.
What does it mean if my ex’s card is positive but the outcome is not?
Your ex may still have warm feelings but no intention to return: warmth and readiness for a new attempt are different things. Look at the fourth card for the reason.
How often should I ask about my ex?
Once is enough until something changes — a message, a meeting, news. Asking every day tends to keep the wound open, and the answers start to echo your hopes.
