What tarot birth cards are

Tarot birth cards are the Major Arcana that come from your date of birth. The method was made popular by the tarot teacher Mary K. Greer: you add the day, the month and the year together and then add up the digits of the sum until you reach a number from 1 to 22. That number is a card of the Major Arcana, and it stays with you your whole life — unlike a reading, it does not change with the question.

Most people have two birth cards. The personality card is the first number you reach; it describes your character, the way you act and how others see you. The soul card comes from adding up the personality card's digits, and it speaks of your deeper purpose. When the number is a single digit, one card plays both parts. A sum of 19 leads to three cards — the Sun, the Wheel of Fortune and the Magician — and 22 is the Fool, whose soul card is the Emperor.

The cards that share a soul card form a family, or constellation: there are nine of them, one for each number from 1 to 9. The numbers follow the 1909 deck, where Strength is 8 and Justice is 11.

How to calculate your birth card

  1. Add the day, the month and the year of your birth: for 29 November 1990 that is 29 + 11 + 1990 = 2030.
  2. Add up the digits of the sum: 2 + 0 + 3 + 0 = 5. If the result is still larger than 22, add up its digits again.
  3. A number from 10 to 21 is your personality card; add up its digits to find your soul card — 14, Temperance, leads to 5, the Hierophant.
  4. A single digit is both your personality and your soul card; 22 is the Fool with the Emperor as its soul card.
  5. The calculator above does every step for you and shows the sums it made.

All birth card pairs

The Magician · Wheel of Fortune · The Sun

The family of the Magician is about will and beginnings. These cards belong to people who want to make things happen with their own hands: to start, to create, to be seen doing what they do well. Your gift is initiative and the ability to turn an idea into something real.

With the Wheel of Fortune as the personality card, life moves in cycles, and the art is to catch the right moment and adapt when luck turns. With the Sun, warmth, openness and joy draw people to you. The lesson of the whole family is to use your power with focus and honesty, not to scatter it or to need constant applause.

The High Priestess · Justice · Judgement

The family of the High Priestess is about inner knowing. These cards belong to people who sense what is hidden, weigh what they see and look for the truth behind appearances. Your gift is intuition, a quiet mind and a fine sense of what is fair.

With Justice as the personality card, balance, honesty and responsibility are central, and others often bring you their disputes to settle. With Judgement, you are drawn to a calling and to moments of awakening that change the course of a life. The lesson is to trust your inner voice and act on it, instead of only watching, judging or keeping silent.

The Empress · The Hanged Man · The World

The family of the Empress is about creation and care. These cards belong to people who make things grow — children, gardens, projects, beauty, comfort. Your gift is creativity, abundance and the ability to nurture others and yourself.

With the Hanged Man as the personality card, you see the world from an unusual angle, and pauses or sacrifices bring you insight. With the World, you look for wholeness, completion and a wide horizon, often far from home. The lesson is to give without losing yourself and to let your ideas take shape, not only to dream of them.

The Emperor · Death · The Fool

The family of the Emperor is about structure and change. These cards belong to people who build — order, systems, homes, careers — and who are not afraid to tear down what no longer works. Your gift is leadership, reliability and strength of purpose.

With Death as the personality card, your life is a series of transformations: endings clear the way for new chapters. With the Fool, the 22, freedom and spontaneity balance the Emperor's need for control, and you keep starting over with fresh eyes. The lesson is to combine stability with openness, so that the walls you build protect you without becoming a cage.

The Hierophant · Temperance

The family of the Hierophant is about meaning and teaching. These cards belong to people who look for what is worth believing, pass on knowledge and give others guidance. Your gift is wisdom, loyalty to your values and the ability to explain.

With Temperance as the personality card, you are a natural healer and mediator: you blend opposites, find the middle way and help people recover their balance. The lesson of this family is to keep tradition alive without letting it turn into rigid rules, and to find your own faith instead of borrowing someone else's.

The Lovers · The Devil

The family of the Lovers is about relationships and choices. These cards belong to people for whom love, partnership and the question of what really matters shape the whole of life. Your gift is charm, the ability to connect and a strong sense of your own values.

With the Devil as the personality card, passion and ambition run deep, and you know the pull of desire, money and power. The lesson of this family is freedom of choice: to love without chains, to see your attachments clearly and to choose, again and again, what is true for you.

The Chariot · The Tower

The family of the Chariot is about will and movement. These cards belong to people who set a goal and drive towards it, who need victories and do not like to stand still. Your gift is determination, energy and the courage to take control.

With the Tower as the personality card, life brings sudden turns and breakthroughs, and you are often the one who breaks false structures and says out loud what others avoid. The lesson of this family is to direct your strength instead of letting it rush you, and to learn from the crises that clear your road.

Strength · The Star

The family of Strength is about courage and hope. These cards belong to people whose power is gentle: they tame fear and passion with patience and love, not with force. Your gift is inner strength, warmth and the ability to inspire.

With the Star as the personality card, you carry hope for others, heal and remind them of their dreams, and you need open space and beauty to stay well. The lesson of this family is to believe in yourself as much as you believe in others, and not to hide your light out of doubt.

The Hermit · The Moon

The family of the Hermit is about wisdom and the inner world. These cards belong to seekers who need solitude to hear themselves and who often become guides for others. Your gift is depth, insight and the ability to find your own path.

With the Moon as the personality card, imagination, dreams and intuition are strong, and you are at home in what is unclear to others — art, the unconscious, the hidden. The lesson of this family is to walk through your fears and illusions to the truth, and to come back from your solitude to share what you have found.

Questions and answers

What is the difference between the personality card and the soul card?

The personality card describes how you act and how others see you: your character and your everyday strengths. The soul card speaks of your deeper purpose — what drives you and what you have come to learn. When both are the same card, its energy is especially strong in your life.

Why do other calculators give me a different card?

Some sites add up every digit of the date at once, others subtract 22 instead of adding up the digits, and decks number Strength and Justice differently. We follow Mary K. Greer's method — the day, the month and the year added together — with the numbers of the 1909 deck.

Does my birth card change over the years?

No. Your birth cards stay the same for life. What changes each year is the year card: add the day and month of your birth to the current year and reduce it the same way.

Can a reversed card be my birth card?

Birth cards are not drawn, so they have no upright or reversed position. Each card has both sides, though: its gifts and its shadow, and both are part of your path.
