Love tarot reading

Five cards about two people: what you feel, what is going on with your partner, what your relationship is like now, what stands in its way and where it is heading. Shuffle the deck and turn the cards over.

1 You
2 Your partner
3 The relationship now
4 What stands in the way
5 Where it is heading

About the spread

This spread is made for one question: “What is going on between us?” It works for a long-standing couple, for a relationship that is only just beginning, and for the times when you are not sure there is a relationship at all. Five cards show both sides and what grows between them.

The top row has three cards: you, the relationship and your partner — the bond sits in the middle, between two people. The bottom row shows what stands in the way and the direction things are moving in. The spread does not replace a conversation with the other person, but it helps you see what that conversation should be about.

How to do the reading

  1. Think of a specific person and a specific relationship. You can frame it as a question: “What do I need to understand about us right now?”
  2. Type your question into the box above the deck if you like. It never leaves this page.
  3. Press “Shuffle and deal”: three cards land in the top row and two in the bottom row.
  4. Turn over “You” and “Your partner” first, then the middle card — that makes it easier to see how two people come together as a couple.
  5. Then turn over the bottom row and read the meanings below the spread. Each card’s full meaning, including in love, is on its page.

What each position means

  1. 1 You

The left card is you in this relationship: your feelings, your expectations and how you act. Sometimes the card shows something other than what you think of yourself — caution, say, where you believed you were open. That is a reason to look at yourself more closely.

  2. 2 Your partner

The right card is your partner: their state of mind, feelings and attitude towards you at present. Remember that the card describes the person’s energy; it does not read their mind. Court cards here often show your partner’s character and role.

  3. 3 The relationship now

The middle card is the relationship itself: what arises between the two of you. It may differ from both your card and your partner’s — a couple has a character of its own. If you are unsure where to begin, begin with this card.

  4. 4 What stands in the way

The bottom left card is what stands in the way: circumstances, old hurts, fears, things left unsaid or different goals. A favourable card here means the obstacle is too much of a good thing, such as expectations that are too high.

  5. 5 Where it is heading

The bottom right card is where the relationship is heading if everything stays as it is. It is a direction, not a verdict: it changes when what the “What stands in the way” card showed changes.

How to read the spread as a whole

Compare the “You” and “Your partner” cards: are they of the same suit, are the figures looking at each other or away? Cups speak of feelings, Wands of passion and initiative, Swords of thoughts and arguments, Pentacles of everyday life and reliability. If both cards share a suit, you speak the same language; if not, it is worth learning each other’s.

Major Arcana in the middle of the spread show that the relationship is an important life lesson for you. A reversed card in your partner’s position does not necessarily mean coldness: often it is uncertainty, or that the person is caught up in their own concerns right now.

Questions about the spread

Does this spread work if there is no relationship yet?

Yes. The “Your partner” card then shows the person you are thinking about, and the middle card what could develop between you. If there is no particular person, the three-card spread with a question about a future relationship is a better choice.

Can the cards tell me how my partner feels about me?

Your partner’s card describes their state and attitude towards you, but it is a view from outside, not mind reading. The most accurate answer comes from talking — and the reading can help you decide where to start.

How often can I do a love reading?

No more often than the relationship noticeably changes: after an important conversation, an argument or an event. If you draw every day, the cards will reflect your anxiety rather than the relationship.

Which cards are best in a love reading?

The Lovers, the Two of Cups, the Ten of Cups, the Sun and the Star are considered the most favourable. But every card matters in its position: even the Tower in the “What stands in the way” position can mean the obstacle is about to fall.
