The suit of Swords: air, mind and truth

Swords are the suit of air: thoughts, words, decisions and the truth that cuts through illusions. They are the hardest suit to look at and often the most honest one.

What the suit of Swords means

A sword cuts and separates, and so does the mind: it analyses, decides, defends, sometimes wounds. Swords belong to the element of Air and to the air signs Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. They speak of thinking and communication, of justice and conflict, of worries and of the clarity that follows them.

In playing cards the Swords are spades.

Air in light and shadow

In their light the Swords are clarity and courage of thought: the Ace’s breakthrough, the Six’s calm passage to better waters, the King’s fair judgement. In their shadow, thoughts become a trap: the Three’s heartbreak, the Eight’s self-made prison, the Nine’s sleepless night, the Ten’s painful ending.

Swords cards often look frightening, but they rarely predict disaster. Most of them show how the mind exaggerates, and point to the truth that sets you free.

Many Swords in a reading

When several Swords appear together, the situation is about thoughts, words and decisions: a conflict, a difficult conversation, an exam, a choice to make. Look for facts, speak honestly and do not let anxiety write the story for you. Many reversed Swords can show worries that are bigger in your head than in reality.
