Symbolism of the card
A woman in a red dress stands blindfolded, her arms loosely bound with cloth. Around her eight swords are stuck in the ground like a fence, but there is a gap in front of her. She stands on wet, muddy ground; behind her, on a rocky cliff, rises a castle.
She cannot see, so she does not know that she could walk away: the bonds are loose, and the swords do not surround her completely. The blindfold is fear and negative thinking that limit our vision. The castle is the safety she has left or could return to. The trap is more in her mind than in reality.
Upright meaning
Upright, the Eight of Swords shows a situation in which you feel stuck, powerless or restricted. It may be a job, a relationship or circumstances — but the card suggests that the biggest limits are in your thoughts: fear, self-doubt, old beliefs.
Take off the blindfold. Look for small steps you can take right now, ask for help, and question the story that says you have no choice.
Reversed meaning
Reversed, the Eight of Swords shows liberation: you see the situation more clearly, overcome fear and begin to free yourself. New options appear, and you regain control.
Keep going — every step out of the circle of swords makes the next one easier.
