Symbolism of the card

A horned creature with the head of a goat and the wings of a bat crouches on a black block. An inverted pentagram glows on its forehead; one hand is raised, the other holds a torch pointing down. Chained to the block stand a naked man and woman. They have small horns and tails — hers ends in a bunch of grapes, his in a flame. The chains around their necks are loose.

The figure is a dark mirror of the Lovers: the same couple, but now without the angel, bound by desire and fear instead of blessed by love. The grapes and the flame are pleasure and passion that have turned into compulsion. The inverted pentagram is spirit placed beneath matter. And the most important detail: the chains are wide enough to lift over the head. The prisoners could leave — they simply believe they cannot.

Upright meaning

Upright, the Devil points to something that has power over you: a habit, a dependence, a relationship, money, a job you stay in only out of fear, or a way of thinking that keeps you small. You may feel stuck and convince yourself that there is no choice.

The card does not judge — it shows honestly where you have given away your freedom. The first step is to name what holds you. Once you see the chain clearly, you will notice that it is not locked: change is possible, even if it is not easy.

Reversed meaning

The Devil (reversed)

Reversed, the Devil shows liberation: you are recognising what has been holding you back and starting to break free. An addiction may loosen, a toxic relationship may end, fears lose their grip.

Sometimes the reversed card warns that the temptation is not gone but hidden — so stay attentive. Overall, though, it is a hopeful sign: you are taking back control of your life.

Love and relationships

Upright

In love the Devil speaks of strong passion and physical attraction — but also of jealousy, possessiveness, dependence or a relationship you cannot leave even though it hurts. For single people it can mean an intense but unhealthy attraction. Ask yourself whether this bond makes you freer or smaller.

Reversed

Reversed, the card points to freeing yourself from an unhealthy relationship or pattern, or to a couple overcoming jealousy and control. It is a step towards a healthier love.

The Devil as feelings

As feelings, the Devil shows intense desire and obsession. This person is strongly attracted to you, perhaps more physically than emotionally, and the feelings may include possessiveness.

Work and money

Upright

At work the Devil can mean staying in a job only for the money, a toxic workplace, manipulation or an unhealthy dependence on success. Financially it warns of debts, greed or risky temptations. Look at what keeps you where you are.

Reversed

Reversed, the card points to freeing yourself from a draining job, paying off debts or seeing through manipulation. It is a time to regain independence.

Health and wellbeing

The Devil can point to harmful habits or dependencies that drain your energy. Reversed, it shows the strength to give them up. Addictions and health concerns deserve professional help from a doctor or specialist.

Yes or no

No (upright) · Maybe (reversed)

Upright, the Devil answers no: the situation is driven by temptation or fear and will not bring you what you hope for. Reversed, the answer is maybe — once you break free, the way opens.
