Symbolism of the card
A winged angel in a white robe stands with one foot in a pool of water and the other on the land. On the robe’s chest is a square with a triangle inside, on the forehead a solar sign. The angel pours water from one golden cup into another — the stream flows at an angle, as if defying gravity. Beside the pool grow yellow irises, and a path leads from the water to distant mountains, where a crown of light rises.
One foot in water and one on land is the balance between feeling and practicality. Pouring between the cups is the slow art of mixing — emotions with reason, past with future — in the right proportion. The square and triangle show spirit within matter. The irises recall Iris, the messenger of the rainbow, and the path to the shining crown says that patience leads to a higher goal.
Upright meaning
Upright, Temperance asks for the middle way. Avoid extremes — in work and rest, in food and pleasure, in your reactions to people. Things will work out not by a sudden leap but by steady, patient adjustment.
The card also speaks of healing and reconciliation: relationships can be restored, inner conflicts can calm down, and different parts of your life can be brought into harmony. Combine what seems incompatible, find compromises, and give processes the time they need.
Reversed meaning
Reversed, Temperance shows imbalance: too much of something and too little of something else. It may be overwork, overspending, overeating, emotional swings, or conflict between people who cannot find common ground.
The card also warns of impatience — wanting results now and ruining things by forcing them. Step back, look at where you have gone to an extreme, and restore the measure in small steps.
Love and relationships
Upright
In love Temperance brings harmony and mutual understanding. For single people it can mean a calm, well-matched relationship that develops gradually. For couples it speaks of balance, compromise and healing after difficulties; partners complement each other.
Reversed
Reversed, the card warns of imbalance in the relationship — one gives more, the other takes more — of frequent conflicts or of a lack of patience. Find a compromise before demanding change.
Temperance as feelings
As feelings, Temperance shows calm, steady affection. This person feels at ease with you, sees you as a good match and wants a balanced, harmonious relationship.
Work and money
Upright
At work Temperance favours cooperation, mediation, careful planning and steady progress. It is a good time to find the balance between work and rest and to combine different skills. Financially, moderation and a balanced budget pay off.
Reversed
Reversed, the card points to overwork, conflicts in the team or poor management of resources. Slow down and set priorities.
Health and wellbeing
Temperance is one of the best cards for wellbeing: moderation, a balanced routine and gradual recovery. Reversed, it warns of excess. Consult a doctor about any health concerns.
Yes or no
Yes (upright) · Maybe (reversed)
Upright, Temperance answers yes, but gradually: patience and balance will bring the result. Reversed, the answer is maybe — first restore the balance.
