Symbolism of the card
A skeleton in black armour rides a white horse and carries a black banner with a white five-petalled rose. Before him a king lies fallen, his crown on the ground; a bishop in a mitre faces him with folded hands; a young woman turns away and a child looks up with flowers. In the distance a boat sails on a river, and the sun rises between two towers.
The skeleton is what remains when everything temporary is gone; the armour shows that this force cannot be stopped. Before it everyone is equal — king, priest, woman and child: endings come to all, and only the attitude differs. The white rose is the promise of rebirth, the white horse is purity and life force. The river and the boat are the passage from one shore to another, and the sun rising between the towers says that after the night comes a new day.
Upright meaning
Upright, Death says that something in your life has run its course. A relationship, a job, a habit, a way of seeing yourself — whatever it is, it is ending, and trying to hold on only prolongs the pain. The ending may be sudden or slow, but it is real.
This is not a punishment but a clearing. When the old is released, space appears for what is truer and more alive. Allow yourself to grieve what is passing, but do not stop at the door: the transformation is already happening, and the new chapter will come.
Reversed meaning
Reversed, Death shows resistance to a change that is already necessary. You may be clinging to the past out of fear of the unknown, staying in a situation that no longer gives you anything, or postponing an ending that would bring relief.
Sometimes the change is happening inside but has not yet shown on the outside. Be honest about what is over. Letting go is not losing — it is making room.
Love and relationships
Upright
In love Death means a deep transformation. For single people it can mean finally letting go of a past relationship or an old pattern, which opens the way for something new. For couples it can be the end of one stage and the start of a more mature one — or, if the relationship has exhausted itself, an honest parting.
Reversed
Reversed, the card warns of holding on to a relationship that is no longer alive, or of an on-and-off pattern without a clear ending. Fear of being alone may be stronger than the feelings themselves.
Death as feelings
As feelings, Death shows that this person is going through a deep inner change because of you or in their attitude to the relationship. Their feelings are serious and transforming — or they are quietly letting go.
Work and money
Upright
At work Death means the end of a chapter: leaving a job, closing a project, a change of profession or a restructuring. It is a chance to stop what no longer works. Financially, one source of income may end while another becomes possible.
Reversed
Reversed, the card points to staying in a job out of fear, dragging a dead project along, or resisting necessary changes. Delaying will make the transition harder.
Health and wellbeing
Death does not predict illness or death. It speaks of the end of a difficult period and of renewal, or of the need to drop a harmful habit. Reversed, it may mean holding on to what exhausts you. Any health concern is a question for a doctor.
Yes or no
No (upright) · Maybe (reversed)
Upright, Death answers no: this chapter is closing, and something new is coming instead. Reversed, the answer is maybe — it depends on whether you are ready to let go.
Death as advice
Let go of what is over, with gratitude. Allow yourself to grieve, but do not stay at the closed door — something new needs the space you are freeing.
As the card of the day
A day for endings: finish something, clear out what is unnecessary, say goodbye to an old habit. Make room for the new.
