Symbolism of the card

A man and a woman stand naked in a garden, as in Eden. Above them, in the clouds, an angel with wide wings and a purple robe spreads his arms in blessing, and a large sun shines behind him. Behind the woman grows a tree with fruit and a snake wound around it; behind the man, a tree whose leaves are flames. Between them rises a distant mountain.

Nakedness means openness: nothing is hidden between them. The angel — Raphael, the healer — shows that true love is blessed from above and connects body, heart and spirit. The tree of knowledge with the snake stands for temptation and the choice that comes with it; the tree of flames, for passion. The man looks at the woman, and the woman looks up at the angel: love leads to something higher than the two of them.

Upright meaning

Upright, the Lovers speak of a strong bond — romantic, but also friendship or partnership — built on attraction, honesty and shared values. Relationships can deepen now, and you may feel truly seen by another person.

The card also marks a choice. It may be between two people, two paths or two versions of yourself. The right decision is not the easiest or the most profitable one, but the one that matches who you are and what you believe in. Choose with your whole heart.

Reversed meaning

The Lovers (reversed)

Reversed, the Lovers point to disharmony: misunderstandings, values that no longer match, a relationship out of balance, or temptation that puts trust at risk.

It can also describe a decision you keep postponing or a choice made for the wrong reasons — to please others or to avoid loneliness. Be honest with yourself about what you want, and talk openly with the people concerned.

Love and relationships

Upright

In love this is one of the strongest cards. For single people it promises a meeting with real chemistry and the feeling of having found “your” person. For couples it means harmony, passion, deeper trust and sometimes a decision to take the next step together.

The card favours sincerity: say what you feel.

Reversed

Reversed, the Lovers warn of cooling feelings, conflicting values, infidelity or a love triangle. It may also mean you are torn between two people. Clarity and honesty are needed now.

The Lovers as feelings

As feelings, the Lovers show strong attraction and love. This person feels a deep connection with you, sees you as special and may consider you a soulmate.

Work and money

Upright

At work the Lovers favour partnerships, teamwork and choosing a path you truly care about. A business partner or a job offer may appear, and the decision should rest on shared values. In money matters, it is a time for careful choices rather than impulse.

Reversed

Reversed, the card warns of conflict with a partner, a job that goes against your values or a hard choice you are avoiding. Weigh your options honestly.

Health and wellbeing

The Lovers point to the role of harmony — in relationships and within yourself — for wellbeing. Reversed, emotional stress may affect how you feel. Physical symptoms should be checked with a doctor.

Yes or no

Yes (upright) · No (reversed)

Upright, the Lovers answer yes, especially in matters of love and agreement. Reversed, the answer is no: something is out of balance, or the choice goes against your heart.
