Symbolism of the card

A religious teacher in red robes and a triple crown sits between two grey pillars. His right hand is raised in blessing, two fingers pointing up; his left holds a staff with a triple cross. At his feet lie two crossed keys, and two tonsured followers kneel before him — one wearing a robe with roses, the other with lilies.

The Hierophant is a bridge between the sacred and the everyday: what the High Priestess knows in silence, he teaches openly. The crossed keys open the doors of knowledge and of the community. The two followers are students receiving a tradition; their roses and lilies echo the Magician’s garden — desire and pure thought now brought into a shared path.

Upright meaning

Upright, the Hierophant points to the value of what is tested and shared. It is a good time to learn from a mentor, follow a proven method, join a group, or rely on established rules rather than reinventing everything yourself.

The card also speaks of commitment and ritual: marriage, ceremonies, official agreements, family traditions. Your values matter now — act in line with what you truly believe, and look for people who share them.

Reversed meaning

The Hierophant (reversed)

Reversed, the Hierophant questions the rules. You may feel that traditions, institutions or other people’s expectations no longer fit you, and that it is time to find your own way. That can be healthy growth.

The reversed card can also warn about blind obedience or dogma — following rules that no longer make sense — or about a teacher or organisation that abuses its authority. Think for yourself, but keep what is truly valuable.

Love and relationships

Upright

In love the Hierophant favours serious, committed relationships built on shared values. For single people it can mean meeting someone through family, friends, work or a community. For couples it often points to engagement, marriage or making the relationship official.

The relationship is traditional in a good sense: loyal, respectful and supported by the people around you.

Reversed

Reversed, the card can describe a relationship that does not fit expectations — different backgrounds, unconventional forms — or pressure from family. It may also warn of a relationship kept only out of duty. Ask what you both really want.

The Hierophant as feelings

As feelings, the Hierophant shows respect and serious intentions. This person sees you as a partner for something lasting and may already think about family, introductions to loved ones or a shared future.

Work and money

Upright

At work the Hierophant favours education, large organisations, state institutions, law, medicine and teaching. Learning, certification or a mentor will help you grow. Financially it advises conservative, proven solutions rather than risky experiments.

Reversed

Reversed, the card points to conflict with rules or bosses, bureaucracy, or a wish to break away from a rigid system. Innovation is possible, but check the conditions carefully.

Health and wellbeing

The Hierophant advises following proven advice and regular routines; it is a good moment to see a specialist for a check-up. Reversed, it may mean ignoring recommendations. Health questions belong with a doctor.

Yes or no

Yes (upright) · Maybe (reversed)

Upright, the Hierophant answers yes if you follow the usual, proven path. Reversed, the answer is maybe: it can work out, but not in the conventional way.
