Symbolism of the card
A young warrior in armour stands in a stone chariot under a canopy of stars. On his head is a crown with a star, on his shoulders two crescent moons, in his hand a wand. He holds no reins. In front of the chariot lie two sphinxes, one black and one white, looking in different directions. Behind him stand the walls and towers of a city, and a river flows between.
The sphinxes are opposing forces — instinct and reason, fear and desire — and the warrior steers them not with reins but with will alone. The starry canopy shows that his journey is under the protection of higher powers; the city behind him is the familiar world he is leaving for a goal. The chariot itself is solid stone: his victory comes from inner steadiness, not from speed.
Upright meaning
Upright, the Chariot is a card of forward movement. You know what you want, and your determination can overcome obstacles. It is a time to act, to compete, to travel, to push a project through — and to win.
The key is control: of your emotions, your doubts and the different interests pulling you in opposite directions. Focus on one goal and keep your course, and things will move quickly.
Reversed meaning
Reversed, the Chariot shows that the forces are pulling apart. You may lack direction, feel stuck, or try to go everywhere at once. Plans may stall because of obstacles or because your heart and head want different things.
It can also warn of the opposite extreme: forcing things, aggression, pushing ahead without regard for others. Stop, decide where you really want to go, and only then move again.
Love and relationships
Upright
In love the Chariot brings momentum. For single people it can mean an energetic new relationship or meeting someone while travelling. For couples it points to moving forward together — a big step, a move, a shared goal — and overcoming difficulties by joint effort.
Reversed
Reversed, the Chariot warns of power struggles, a partner who wants to steer everything, or a relationship that has lost direction. It may also mean rushing things. Agree on where you are going together.
The Chariot as feelings
As feelings, the Chariot shows determination: this person knows what they want and is actively pursuing you. Their interest is confident and purposeful.
Work and money
Upright
At work the Chariot promises progress, promotion, success in negotiations or competition, and business trips. Ambition and discipline pay off. Financially, gains come through focused effort and a clear strategy.
Reversed
Reversed, the card points to delays, conflicts, burnout from overpushing or a lack of a clear plan. Reset your priorities before going further.
Health and wellbeing
The Chariot gives energy and the will to overcome difficulties; a good card for sport and recovery through discipline. Reversed, it can mean exhaustion from constant pushing. See a doctor about any health concerns.
Yes or no
Yes (upright) · No (reversed)
Upright, the Chariot answers yes: you will succeed if you stay focused and act. Reversed, the answer is no for now — direction or control is missing.
The Chariot as advice
Choose one goal and keep your course. Control your emotions instead of letting them drive you, and do not let opposing pressures pull you apart.
As the card of the day
A day for decisive action and progress. Set a clear goal in the morning and move towards it — you have the energy to win.
