Symbolism of the card
A man with a crown sits on a stool, clutching a pentacle tightly against his chest. Another pentacle rests on his crown, and two more lie under his feet. Behind him, a city spreads out, but he has his back to it.
He holds his wealth with his whole body: arms, head and feet are all busy guarding the coins. This brings safety, but it also leaves no hand free to give, receive or create. The city behind him is life and other people, from which he has turned away. The card asks: does what you hold serve you, or do you serve it?
Upright meaning
Upright, the Four of Pentacles speaks of the need for security: saving money, protecting what you have built, keeping control. This can be wise — a reserve, a budget, firm boundaries.
But the card also warns of holding on too tightly: fear of loss, stinginess, inability to share or to take risks, attachment to possessions or people. Stability is good; rigidity is not.
Reversed meaning
Reversed, the Four of Pentacles can mean loosening your grip: becoming more generous, letting go of control, sharing. It can also mean the opposite extreme — overspending, financial instability or losing what you held.
Look for the balance between security and openness.
Love and relationships
Upright
In love the Four of Pentacles points to possessiveness, jealousy or fear of losing the partner — or to emotional reserve. A relationship may be stable but closed. Trust and openness are needed.
Reversed
Reversed, the card can mean letting go of control and allowing more freedom, or insecurity and instability in the relationship.
