Symbolism of the card
A man tiptoes away from a military camp with colourful tents, carrying five swords in his arms. Two more swords remain stuck in the ground behind him. He looks back over his shoulder with a sly smile, as if checking whether anyone has noticed.
He has taken something that does not belong to him, and he seems pleased with himself. Yet he could not carry everything — two swords remain, and he may be caught. The camp in the background represents the community he deceives. The card shows cleverness turned into dishonesty, or a necessary strategy carried out quietly.
Upright meaning
Upright, the Seven of Swords warns of deception: someone may not be honest with you, or you may be tempted to cut corners, hide something or avoid a confrontation by acting secretly.
It can also simply mean strategy — acting alone, quietly, cleverly. Check your motives and others’: is this smart planning or a lie? Protect your interests and verify information.
Reversed meaning
Reversed, the Seven of Swords points to the truth coming out: a confession, a secret revealed, someone getting caught. It can also mean listening to your conscience and deciding to act honestly — or deceiving yourself.
Honesty may be uncomfortable now, but it costs less than keeping up a lie.
