Symbolism of the card
A young man with a smug smile gathers swords: he holds three and looks at two lying on the ground. Behind him two other figures walk away with bowed heads towards the sea; one seems to be crying. The sky is torn by sharp, restless clouds.
The man has won, but his victory looks petty: he collects weapons while the others leave humiliated. The figures walking away show the cost of the fight — broken relationships. The jagged clouds speak of tension that has not gone away. The card asks whether this victory was worth it.
Upright meaning
Upright, the Five of Swords points to conflict where nobody really wins: an argument, rivalry, manipulation or a situation in which someone gets their way at the expense of others. You may be the winner, the loser or a witness.
Ask yourself whether the fight is worth what it costs. Sometimes it is wiser to walk away, to admit a mistake or to choose peace over being right.
Reversed meaning
Reversed, the Five of Swords shows a chance to end the conflict: reconciliation, apologies, letting go of resentment. It can also mean that old wounds still hurt and that resentment lingers.
If you can make amends, do it. If not, let go of the fight for your own peace.
