About the spread
The year ahead spread is a favourite at New Year and on birthdays: it gives a map of the coming twelve months, so you can see when to start new things, when to slow down and what the year as a whole is about. The cards lie like a wheel or a clock face — January in the top left corner, the months running clockwise, and the theme of the year in the centre.
Treat the reading as a map, not a timetable. Each month’s card describes its main mood and the area of life that will ask for attention. The central card is the key: it shows the lesson or gift of the year, and every month can be read in its light. Many people save the spread and look back at it in December.
How to do the reading
- Choose a quiet moment around New Year, your birthday or the start of a new stage in your life.
- Type your wish or focus for the year into the box above the deck if you like. It never leaves this page.
- Press “Shuffle and deal”: twelve cards land around the circle and one in the middle.
- Turn over the central card first — the theme of the year — then the months from January to December.
- Read each card’s short meaning below the spread and note the months that stand out. Write the spread down to check it later.
What each position means
1 January
January: the start of the year — the mood you begin it with and the first steps.
2 February
February: what develops from the first month; often relationships and inner work.
3 March
March: a month of movement and new beginnings — what wakes up and grows.
4 April
April: what gains strength; projects and plans that take shape.
5 May
May: the month of blossoming — joys, meetings, what flourishes.
6 June
June: the year approaches its middle — results so far and a check of your direction.
7 July
July: the height of summer — what the year brings to its peak.
8 August
August: harvest and abundance — what pays off, what needs finishing.
9 September
September: a new start after the summer — work, study and plans for the autumn.
10 October
October: a month of change and of letting go of what is no longer needed.
11 November
November: the inner side of the year — reflection, rest and what matures quietly.
12 December
December: completion — how the year ends and what you take into the next one.
13 The theme of the year
The theme of the year, in the centre: its main lesson, gift or challenge. Read every month in its light; if you remember one card of the spread, let it be this one.
How to read the spread as a whole
Look for repeated suits and numbers. Several Aces promise many beginnings during the year, several Tens many completions; a season full of Cups points to love and feelings, one full of Pentacles to work and money. Major Arcana mark the key months — those are the moments the year will be remembered for.
A hard card in a month is a warning, not a sentence: it shows where to be careful and where to save strength. Do not plan your whole year by the cards; use them to notice the rhythm of the year and to be ready for its turns.
Questions about the spread
Can I do the year ahead spread in the middle of the year?
Yes. The positions are named after calendar months, but you can read the first card as the current month and the rest as the months that follow. On a birthday this works especially well.
Is the thirteenth card necessary?
It is optional, but it makes the reading much clearer: it gives the year a main theme and helps you read the months as one story.
Should I do the spread again during the year?
Once a year is enough for the big picture. For a closer look at a particular month or week, use the weekly spread or a three-card reading.
