About the spread
Work takes up a large part of life, and questions about it are rarely simple: a promotion, a new job, a business idea, burnout, a wish to change everything. This spread gives a structured view: what is happening now, what you can rely on, what gets in the way and where the doors are open.
The top row is the present: your work situation, your strengths and what holds you back. The bottom row looks ahead: the opportunities and the direction your career is taking. Pentacles in this spread speak of money and stability, Wands of ambition and projects, Swords of decisions and conflicts, Cups of whether your work makes you happy.
How to do the reading
- Think about your work situation or a specific question: a job offer, a project, a change of profession.
- Type your question into the box above the deck if you like, for example “How will my career develop this year?”. It never leaves this page.
- Press “Shuffle and deal”: three cards land in the top row and two in the bottom row.
- Turn over the cards from left to right and read what each position means below.
- Open a card’s page for its full meaning, including what it says about work.
What each position means
1 Your work now
Your work now: the situation as it really is — stable or shaky, inspiring or draining, growing or stuck. If the card surprises you, ask yourself whether you have been seeing your job as it is.
2 Your strengths
Your strengths: the skills, qualities and resources you can rely on. It may be a talent you underrate. Court cards here describe the professional role in which you are at your best.
3 What holds you back
What holds you back: an external obstacle such as a difficult boss, competition or a lack of money, or an inner one such as doubt, perfectionism or fear of change. A reversed card often points to the inner kind.
4 Opportunities
The opportunities: what is open to you now or will open soon — a new role, a project, a contact, training. Aces in this position are especially good signs of a new beginning.
5 Where it is heading
Where your career is heading if you keep going as you are. Combine it with the second and fourth cards: they show how to steer towards a better result.
How to read the spread as a whole
Pay attention to the balance of suits. Many Pentacles mean the question is above all about money and stability; many Wands that you need a goal that excites you; many Swords that a decision or a conflict needs to be resolved; many Cups that you are really asking whether your work makes you happy.
The Eight of Pentacles, the Three of Pentacles, the Chariot, the Sun and the Six of Wands are among the best cards for work; the Ten of Wands warns of overload and the Five of Pentacles of a difficult period. Read them in their positions rather than on their own.
Questions about the spread
Can this spread tell me whether to change jobs?
It shows your current situation, your opportunities and the direction of your career. For a concrete choice between staying and leaving, the decision spread with two paths is even more precise.
Does it work for a business or freelance work?
Yes. Read “Your work now” as the state of your business and “Opportunities” as clients, projects or markets you can reach.
How often should I do a career reading?
Once a month or at important moments: before an interview, a negotiation or a big decision. If you draw more often, the cards start to reflect your daily mood.
