Free birth chart calculator

Enter your date, time and place of birth and your natal chart is drawn on a 3D table: signs, houses, planets and aspects, with your Sun, Moon and rising sign laid out as tarot cards.

What a birth chart is

A birth chart, or natal chart, is a picture of the sky at the moment you were born: where the Sun, the Moon and the planets stood, in which signs of the zodiac and in which of the twelve houses. Astrologers read it as a map of character: what gives you energy, how you feel and love, what you strive for and where your lessons lie.

The chart here is calculated with precise astronomical formulas for your town and hour, with the time zone, summer time and any historical clock changes of that place and year. The houses are Placidus, as in most astrology software.

How to draw your birth chart

  1. Choose your date of birth: day, month and year.
  2. Enter the time of birth by the local clock, as it is written on your birth certificate or as your parents remember it. If you don't know it, tick «I don't know».
  3. Start typing the town where you were born and pick it from the list. If your village is not there, choose the nearest town.
  4. Press «Draw the chart»: the zodiac wheel with your planets appears on the table, with the three cards of your big three beside it.
  5. Below the table, read about your Sun, Moon and rising sign and see where every planet stands and which aspects they make. The full reading goes through the whole chart.

Sun, Moon and rising sign

The big three are the heart of a birth chart. The Sun is the core of your personality: what gives you energy and makes you yourself. The Moon is your feelings and needs: what calms you and feels like home. The ascendant, or rising sign, is how you meet the world and how others see you at first.

Many people recognise themselves less in their Sun sign — what everyone calls their «star sign» — than in the mix of all three. A fire Sun with a water Moon, for example, gives boldness in action and tenderness in feeling.

If you don't know your time of birth

Without the time of birth the chart can still be drawn: the planets barely change sign in a day. But the rising sign changes every two hours or so, and the houses even faster, so without the time they are left out. The Moon crosses a sign in two or three days: if it changed sign on the day you were born, we show both.

Even an approximate time is better than none: to within half an hour the rising sign is usually right.

Houses and aspects

The twelve houses are areas of life: self, money, communication, home, love and creativity, work and health, partnership, crises and shared resources, travel and learning, career, friends and what is hidden. A planet in a house shows where its energy works most strongly. The midheaven (MC) speaks of your calling.

Aspects are the angles between planets. Trines and sextiles bring ease and talents, squares and oppositions bring tension that pushes you to grow, and a conjunction fuses two planets' energies into one.

The birth chart and tarot

Astrology and tarot share a language. In the Golden Dawn system each sign of the zodiac has its Major Arcanum: Aries the Emperor, Taurus the Hierophant, Gemini the Lovers, Cancer the Chariot, Leo Strength, Virgo the Hermit, Libra Justice, Scorpio Death, Sagittarius Temperance, Capricorn the Devil, Aquarius the Star, Pisces the Moon.

That is why your big three lie on the table as cards: the arcanum of your Sun sign, of your Moon sign and of your rising sign. Tap a card to look at it closely; the link under it opens the card's full meaning.

Capricorn

Sun in Capricorn is responsibility and the long game. You set goals for years ahead and climb towards them step by step without complaining. Your strength is intuition, kindness and an artist's gift; your weak spot is losing yourself in others and escaping from what is hard. Quiet, water and creative work restore you.

The Moon in the signs

Aries

Moon in Aries: feelings flare up fast and pass just as fast. You need the freedom to act and the right to be angry without long explanations. Movement calms you: sport, a new project, an honest straight talk. You don't hold grudges for long, but you don't like to wait either.

Taurus

Moon in Taurus: a need for calm and constancy. You need to know that tomorrow will be as safe as today: home, money, someone close beside you. Good food, hugs, nature and a familiar rhythm calm you. Sudden changes throw you off balance, but your attachments are strong.

Gemini

Moon in Gemini: feelings need to be put into words. You feel better once you can talk things over, write them down and sort them out. Conversation, a book and new information calm you. Your mood changes quickly, and you grow restless where there is no one to talk to.

Cancer

Moon in Cancer: deep sensitivity and a pull towards home. You need people close to you, care and a place to hide from the world. You remember warmth and hurt for a long time. Family, a cosy home, home cooking and familiar faces calm you.

Leo

Moon in Leo: your heart needs warmth and recognition. You need your love to be noticed and valued, and to be loved openly, without hints. Creativity, celebration and someone who truly admires you calm you. Indifference hurts more than criticism.

Virgo

Moon in Virgo: calm comes through order. You feel better when everything is clear, in its place and your hands have something to do. You show care in deeds rather than words. A plan, tidying up, a walk and small useful tasks ease your worries.

Libra

Moon in Libra: a need for harmony and partnership. Quarrels and rudeness throw you off balance; beauty and courtesy calm you. You feel best beside someone close with whom everything is discussed gently and as equals. Take care not to give up your own wishes for peace at any price.

Scorpio

Moon in Scorpio: strong, deep feelings that you hide from strangers. You need complete trust and closeness without pretence. You remember both good and bad for a long time. Solitude, an honest talk with the person closest to you and work you can give yourself to calm you.

Sagittarius

Moon in Sagittarius: your feelings need room. Routine and rules feel tight, and you feel light where there is a road, a meaning and hope. Travel, books, talks about what matters and humour calm you. You tend to outgrow hard feelings rather than live through them — sometimes they need room too.

Capricorn

Moon in Capricorn: feelings under control. You don't like to show weakness and feel calmest when everything depends on you. You show care through responsibility and action. Work, clear rules and a goal reached calm you; let yourself rest and accept help as well.

Aquarius

Moon in Aquarius: your feelings need freedom. You need to stay yourself even in the closest relationship, and pressure or jealousy push you away. Friends, new ideas and a little distance to think things over calm you. Your sympathy comes through understanding first and the heart second.

Pisces

Moon in Pisces: fine sensitivity and strong intuition. You soak up the moods of the people around you, so you need quiet time to come back to yourself. Music, water, sleep and creative work calm you. Learn to tell your own feelings from other people's.

The rising sign

Aries

Aries rising: you come across as energetic and direct, someone who takes the lead at once. In new places you act quickly and boldly. Being first suits you, but a pause before you answer keeps your directness from sounding harsh.

Questions and answers

Is the birth chart free?

Yes. The zodiac wheel with planets, houses and aspects, the position of every planet and the description of your Sun, Moon and rising sign are free. Only the full reading, written for your whole chart, is paid.

What if I don't know my time of birth?

Tick «I don't know»: the chart is drawn for noon, with the signs of all the planets but without the rising sign and the houses. If the Moon changed sign that day, both signs are shown.

My town is not on the list. What should I choose?

The list has every town in the world with five thousand people or more. If you were born in a village, choose the nearest town: a few dozen kilometres hardly change the chart.

Is a birth chart the same as a horoscope?

A newspaper horoscope uses only your Sun sign. A birth chart is calculated for your exact date, time and place, so it shows all the planets, the houses and the rising sign — it is unique to you.
