What a life path number is
Your life path number is the sum of your date of birth reduced to a single digit or to one of the master numbers 11, 22 and 33. Numerologists read it as the main theme of a life: not a fate written in stone, but the road you keep coming back to, with its natural gifts and the lessons that repeat until they are learned.
Of all the numbers in a numerology chart, the life path is the one that changes least. Your name can change and every year brings a new personal number, but the date you were born stays the same. That is why the life path number is the first one people look up, and the one most often compared between partners, friends and colleagues.
How to calculate your life path number
- Write down the month, the day and the year of your birth: 29 November 1990 is 11, 29 and 1990.
- Reduce each part to a single digit by adding up its digits, but keep 11, 22 and 33 as they are: the month 11 stays 11, the day 29 gives 2 + 9 = 11, the year 1990 gives 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10 and 1 + 0 = 1.
- Add the three results together: 11 + 11 + 1 = 23.
- Reduce the sum the same way: 2 + 3 = 5. If you reach 11, 22 or 33, stop there: that is a master number.
- Read the meaning of your number below, and the tarot card that carries the same number.
Master numbers 11, 22 and 33
Three numbers are not reduced: 11, 22 and 33. Numerologists call them master numbers and read them as a stronger, more demanding version of the digit they would otherwise become: 11 of 2, 22 of 4 and 33 of 6. They bring larger gifts and a heavier lesson, and many people with a master number live it as its single digit for years before they grow into it.
Reducing the month, the day and the year separately is what keeps these numbers visible. If you add up all the digits of a date at once, the result is usually the same single digit, but a master number hidden in one part of the date can disappear.
Life path numbers and the tarot
Numerology and tarot share their numbers. Each life path number has a Major Arcana card with the same number in the 1909 deck: 1 is the Magician, 2 the High Priestess, 3 the Empress, and so on up to 9, the Hermit. The master number 11 is Justice, 22 is the Fool, whose place at the end of the Major Arcana is the 22nd, and 33 is the Lovers, because 3 + 3 = 6.
The card does not replace the number's meaning: it gives it a picture. Look at your card for a minute and you will often recognise the way you move through life: the Magician with all his tools on the table, the Hermit with his lantern, the Fool stepping off the cliff.
Questions and answers
Is the life path number the same as the destiny number?
Not in most Western numerology. The life path number comes from the date of birth, the destiny or expression number comes from the letters of your full name. Some schools, especially in Russia, call the date-of-birth number the number of destiny, so check which one a source means.
Why do other calculators give me a different number?
Most of the time they agree. The difference appears with master numbers: a calculator that adds all the digits at once can turn a master number into its single digit. This calculator reduces the month, the day and the year separately, the most common method, and keeps 11, 22 and 33.
Can my life path number change?
No. It comes from your date of birth, so it stays with you for life. What changes is how you live it: with time most people move from the difficult side of their number to its gifts.
