Symbolism of the card
An old man with a long grey beard, wrapped in a grey hooded cloak, stands alone on a snowy mountain peak. In his right hand he raises a lantern with a six-pointed star shining inside; in his left he holds a long staff. He looks down, as if lighting the path for those who climb after him. The sky around him is dark and quiet.
The mountain peak is the height reached through effort and experience; the snow, the stillness of a place far from everyday bustle. The star in the lantern is the light of wisdom — enough to see the next step, not the whole road. The staff is support and patience on a long path. He is not lost: he has chosen solitude in order to understand, and he is ready to share what he has found.
Upright meaning
Upright, the Hermit invites you to slow down and look inward. Answers will not come from more activity, advice or noise, but from time alone, reflection and honest questions to yourself. It is a good period for study, meditation, walks, journaling — anything that helps you hear your own voice.
The card can also point to a mentor, teacher or wise person who can guide you, or to your own role as someone who lights the way for others. Take the time you need; clarity is close.
Reversed meaning
Reversed, the Hermit shows solitude that has gone too far — isolation, loneliness, cutting yourself off from people who care. Or, the opposite: avoiding being alone with yourself because you fear what you might find, and filling every moment with noise.
Find the balance. If you have withdrawn, reach out to one person you trust. If you have been running from yourself, give yourself a quiet hour and listen.
Love and relationships
Upright
In love the Hermit suggests a pause. For single people it may be a time to understand yourself and what you really want before starting something new. For couples, it can mean a need for personal space or a quieter, more reflective phase in the relationship. Depth matters more than excitement now.
Reversed
Reversed, the card warns of emotional distance, loneliness within a relationship or fear of intimacy. It may also describe someone who shuts others out. Talk about your needs instead of withdrawing.
The Hermit as feelings
As feelings, the Hermit shows that this person is reserved and thoughtful. They may care about you, but need time and space to understand their feelings before showing them.
Work and money
Upright
At work the Hermit favours research, analysis, writing, specialised expertise and independent work. It is a good time to rethink your career direction or deepen your knowledge. Financially, avoid hasty moves; reflect and plan.
Reversed
Reversed, the card points to feeling isolated at work, lack of support, or avoiding decisions. Ask for advice and reconnect with your team.
Health and wellbeing
The Hermit recommends rest, quiet and recovery; time alone can restore your strength. Reversed, it may warn against isolation affecting your mood. Discuss any health concern with a doctor.
Yes or no
Maybe (upright) · No (reversed)
Upright, the Hermit answers maybe: take time to think before deciding, and the answer will become clear. Reversed, the answer is rather no, because you are avoiding something important.
The Hermit as advice
Step away from the noise and listen to yourself. You do not need to see the whole path — just light the next step. Seek out a wise person if you need guidance.
As the card of the day
A day for quiet and reflection: spend some time alone, think things over and do not rush decisions.
