Symbolism of the card
A young man sits under a tree with his arms and legs crossed, looking down at three cups standing on the grass in front of him. From a cloud beside him a hand offers a fourth cup, but he does not seem to see it. The landscape around him is calm and green.
The crossed arms and legs show a closed posture — he has shut himself off. The three cups are what he already has, and they do not satisfy him. The fourth cup is a new offer, a gift from life, which he ignores because he is looking inward. The tree gives him shade and rest: sometimes withdrawal is needed, but it should not last too long.
Upright meaning
Upright, the Four of Cups describes a period of emotional fatigue or boredom. Nothing seems interesting, what you have does not bring joy, and you are turned inward, perhaps reflecting, perhaps sulking.
The card does not condemn reflection, but it warns: while you look down, you may miss a real opportunity — a new person, an offer, a chance. Look up and around. Gratitude for what you already have can also bring back the taste of life.
Reversed meaning
Reversed, the Four of Cups shows that you are coming out of apathy. Motivation returns, you begin to notice opportunities and are ready to accept what life offers. You may also realise what you truly want and let go of what no longer satisfies you.
Use this awakening: say yes to something new and act while the energy is there.
Love and relationships
Upright
In love the Four of Cups points to boredom, emotional withdrawal or dissatisfaction. For single people it can mean ignoring someone who is interested. For couples it warns of routine and indifference — something needs refreshing.
Reversed
Reversed, the card shows renewed interest in love, readiness for a new relationship or a decision to put energy back into the current one.
Four of Cups as feelings
As feelings, the Four of Cups shows that this person is emotionally withdrawn or uncertain. They may care but feel unmotivated or confused about what they want.
Work and money
Upright
At work the Four of Cups means lack of motivation, boredom or dissatisfaction — and possibly an overlooked opportunity. Look carefully at offers that seem unremarkable. Financially, do not reject a chance too quickly.
Reversed
Reversed, the card points to new motivation, a fresh opportunity accepted or a decision to change your job.
Health and wellbeing
The Four of Cups can point to low mood and emotional fatigue. Rest is useful, but so is gentle activity. Low mood that lasts deserves attention from a doctor.
